‘Stealing An Education’

http://www.usprisonculture.com/blog/2011/01/25/criminalizing-black-women-mom-jailed-for-stealing-an-education-for-her-children/

Ohio mom has been sentenced to ten days in jail for ‘stealing education’. What the hell?
Ok I understand there are rules in effect to prevent overcrowded schools, but are you faserious? Not only has this mother been convicted as a felon for trying to provide her children with their right to education, but she has also lost her livelihood because some judge needed to flex. What ever happen to no child left behind? If the schools located in her district are failing the parent or guardian should have the right to in role their child in a better school.
How does one get charged with stealing education, really? In 2011 there is such thing as stealing education? I thought slavery was over?  Yes, maybe mom should have taken a different avenue but to use her as an example to prevent other parents from doing the same (good luck with that)? I am sure if these children were all stars in some form of sport this would not have happen.
On another note parents, It is important to take the time and look up your laws. Here is an exert from the no child left behind act along with the link to information regarding the issue.
School choice
  • Gives options to students enrolled in schools failing to meet AYP. If a school fails to meet AYP targets two or more years running, the school must offer eligible children the chance to transfer to higher-performing local schools, receive free tutoring, or attend after-school programs.
  • Gives school districts the opportunity to demonstrate proficiency, even for subgroups that do not meet State Minimum Achievement standards, through a process called "safe harbor," a precursor to growth-based or value-added assessments.
